Remembering Monkey Face

Monkey Face & Sweetie Pie
Kittens - Fall 2005

Monkey Face....such a sweet and lovable guy.  When he was a kitten his eyes were so big and round we thought he had the face of a Monkey...and that’s how he became Monkey Face!  He joined our family in the fall of 2005.  We had recently lost a phenomenal cat, Li’l Dude and were desperate to fill the void.  We visited the SPCA in Brandon, MB where we were living at the time and that is where we found Monkey face.  He was there along with a couple of siblings.  Before making an impulse decision, we went home to think about it....were we ready to bring a kitten home, or did we need more time to heal?  That was not a hard decision.  The next day Dan went back to the SPCA with my instructions to “bring home the one with the pink nose”.  Monkey’s nose was always distinctively bubble gum pink.  Dan followed my instructions, but couldn’t resist bringing only one, so along came his sister who we named “Sweetie Pie”.  It was the BEST decision!

Fall 2007
Monkey was a wonderful cat, full of personality.  One of the oddest things about him was that he absolutely loved to be vacuumed.  Most of our cats would go running at the sound of the vacuum, but not monkey.  Dan has even posted a video of him getting vacuumed here.  I always found it odd that the noise of the vacuum didn’t bother him but somehow he simply could not stand the sound of me singing to him!  He’d get downright angry with me if I started to sing to him when he was on my lap.  He’d start to growl and would look up at me with the most disgusted face before jumping down and leaving whenever I did that to him...which of course only made me do it more as it was just hilarious!  And, it was only my voice, not Dad’s....I think he was trying to tell me something, lol!   That said, he loved to come running when I’d call him with a musical version of “Munnn-keey-faace! oh Munn-keey-faace!” 🥰

Monkey loved to cuddle with his sister, that first picture of he and Sweetie cuddling in the chair up at our cottage would be repeated over and over.  For a time, he was his dad’s big suck, he’d hang out in dad’s lap sitting like a human with legs spread and his big belly hanging out.  As he got older, he became more my suck, loving to cuddle up and purr his heart out.  In his final days, his last summer with us in 2019, he loved to hang out on the bench outside in the backyard soaking in the sun.  He wasn’t an outdoor cat, none of our cats have ever been outdoor cats.  But, we’d let them out into the fenced backyard under our supervision.  In his last summer, Monkey didn’t need supervision, we knew he’d never stray far from his prized bench in the sunshine.  He’d stay out there for hours on end, just in heaven.

He was a wonderful loving cat who lived a full life and we miss him.  So does his sister who lost her cuddle buddies when Monkey and Tweety both passed on.  But, she still has us to cuddle with and soon will have a couple new brothers to welcome!
