Day 2 - Monday October 16, 2023

We woke up to a downpour and strong winds, temps at 13 ºC.  Our route would be the same one as last year, heading down I5 toward Seattle then veering East up over the Snoqualmie Pass.  It wasn’t until 3pm that we got out of the wind and rain.   It was nice to be finally out of the grey foggy skies and pouring rain, a good reminder for us of why we head south every winter.

We stopped for the night at the Washington State DOT Rest Area just north of Yakima.  We had stayed at this rest stop last year and we didn’t have good memories of it.  Although a picturesque spot, we had a transport truck running his engine beside us all night last year.  I was worried about a repeat of that again.  You never know in these rest area/truck stops.  This year when we arrived we had a truck pull in beside us who kept releasing air from his tanks every 15 minutes 😳 Dan figured he must have been testing his air tanks.  It went on for over an hour and poor Gizmo refused to come out of his hiding space.  We contemplated leaving but dusk was soon approaching and driving around looking for a spot in the dark is never fun.  So we rolled the dice and hoped the truck would move on.  Thankfully he did move on and although the next truck who pulled in after him did run his engine all night long (sigh) it wasn’t as loud as the one last year and the sound was regular and steady which was easy to adapt to.  Even Gizmo relaxed and finally came out of his hiding spot.  We had a great sleep.  At 5 a.m. I had my regular wake up call (usually from HeyZeus) letting me know it was time to take Heffay out for a pee.  It was a bit of a shock to go outside to a brisk 5 ºC which felt like zero with the windchill.  Brr!!!

A festive fall pumpkin patch we drove by in Washington state

*Something kinda spooky about this day….the night before Dan had a nightmare of HeyZeus being eaten by a black snake so when we stopped here for the night and saw the “Watch for Rattlesnakes” sign Dan urged me to be extra careful when I took HZ for his evening exploration walk, which of course I was. We’ve yet to see a rattlesnake and I’m just fine with that!

Heffay…looking for rattlesnakes 😮..NOT!
